The Mule Rack is a purpose-built rear rack for bikepacking and long-distance adventure touring. Designed for real-world adaptability, it delivers proven strength, versatile load-carrying options, and durability you can trust when routes get rough.

From drybags and cages to strap-style panniers and last-minute resupply hauls, the Mule Rack is built to adapt to the demands of your trip—not the other way around.

During development, the design was refined through hundreds of FEA simulations and validated with thousands of rugged bikepacking miles in the field.

Optimized for modern bikepacking setups, the Mule Rack supports a wide range of carrying configurations:

Strap-style panniers: Compatible with bags like the Freewheel Mission SL and San Util Mini

Top deck “Flat Bed”: Strap-friendly platform with anchor slots and anti-sag structure

Side carry options: Lash additional gear directly to the rack body

Bolt-on cage locations: Over 10 mounting points for cages and cargo accessories

Frame Fit & Compatibility

Max tire clearance:

  • 29 x 2.6" (66 mm)
  • 27.5 x 3.8" (97 mm)

(Actual clearance can vary slightly depending on frame and mount locations)

Mounting:

  • Lower mounts at dropout (required)
  • Upper mounts via seatstay or seat collar rack mounts

Mounting Plates (Foot Plates): The rack comes with either A or B plates

  • Plate A - frames with alternator / swinger- style dropouts (Salsa Alternator / Esker Portage, etc.)
  • with Plate A height = 338 mm / 13.3"
  • Plate B - frames with standard M5 rack eyelets
  • with Plate B height = 365 mm / 14.4"

Pannier Compatibility - Works with modern strap-style mini panniers like Freewheel Mission SL Panniers (Formerly Bedrock Bags Hermosa UL) or San Util Mini Pannier.  These style of panniers handle rugged, off-road terrain much better than the commuter style hard-mounted systems.  Maximum strap width for the pannier is  191mm (7.5") outside-to-outside.  The Mule Rack is not compatible with traditional hook-on commuter panniers.

FAQ

This rack looks different, why?

The Mule Rack is made from laser cut 5052 AL that's CNC bent then heavily deburred and tumbled.  This style of rack avoids the typical failure points of racks which are welds and arm swaging.  It also gives you large faces and slots to mount gear to as you see fit. Each rack body is paired with 6061-T6 foot plates where the additional strength is needed at the lower mounting point. 

Will this fit a full-suspension bike?

No. The Mule is not compatible with full-suspension frames at this time.

Can I use traditional hook-style panniers?

No. The Mule is designed for strap-style panniers. These have proven to be much more reliable and noise free in the wild.
